Once you’re done

Ok, I have few more thoughts I want to share.

I made this guide for educational purposes only. I’m not going to encourage anyone to follow it. The choice is yours. I find it challenging and exciting. If you really can’t stand Windows and don’t want to join the dark side try Ubuntu. The latest version I tried (10.4) is working “out of box” and it’s really easy to install. Again the choice is yours.

I’m patiently collecting money for my real shiny Apple computer. Now after trying OS X I know that this is the direction I will follow. Once I have it I will probably delete this blog.

*****KNOWN ISSUES*****

The system is missing sleep function. I did it on purpose because SleepEnabler kext was always problematic, at least in my case. I’m not going to explain how to get it back. If you want to have it you’re on your own. Visit one of the hackintosh dedicated sites and look for solution. Don’t be afraid to experiment, this is the way to learn something new.

Because the sleep function is not available you’ll have to remember to change power settings in System Preferences. Open System Preferences, go to “Energy Saver” and set “Computer Sleep” option to “Never” both on battery and power adapter.

You can’t update your system using Software Update function. Every time you’ll need to download standalone installer and run it independently. Change the settings in System Preferences “Software Update”. Just uncheck the box “Check for updates”.

Few words about 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 system updates. I didn’t try updating the system to 10.6.7 but I’ve tried 10.6.8 combo update. Before I did some research on different hackintosh forums and many users reported less or more serious problems after updating. The most common issues were: no audio, no network and kernel panic. In my case the computer booted normally, audio was present but I was not able to turn airport on or off, it looked like my wireless card was not properly detected despite the fact that it’s the card pulled out from original macbook. I’m guessing that the network problem could be repaired by installing some modified kexts, but lost of network wasn’t the biggest issue. After 10.6.8 update laptop became really slow. Everything was talking forever. Spinning rainbow cursor wheel appeared after every click. Few times the computer was not responding at all and needed to be shout down using power button. What a nightmare! This update is definitely not worth all the hassle. Let’s just stick with 10.6.6, at least for now.
